St John of God Health Care will build a $70 million, 60-bed private hospital at Midland, after being confirmed today as the developer and operator of a $360 million public hospital at the same location.
Health Minister Kim Hames announced today construction would start on the 307-bed public hospital in July, with the project expected to be complete by 2015.
St John of God was awarded a $5 billion, 23-year deal to operate the public hospital, a deal which Dr Hames claimed would save the government $1.3 billion in construction and operating costs over the same period.
The state and Commonwealth governments are funding the $360 million public hospital project, while the private facility will be fully funded by St John of God and its development consortium, which includes construction giant Brookfield Multiplex, and architecture firm Hassell.
The consortium was selected ahead of listed provider Ramsay Healthcare, which had signed up construction company John Holland along with architects Peter Hunt and Silver Thomas Hanley for its competing proposal.
“We have used our experience in running 13 hospitals across Australia to create a modern, patient-centred design, in conjunction with our design and construction partners Hassell and Brookfield Multiplex,” St John of God executive director Shane Kelly said.
“We are very excited to be operating the hospitals in Midland, which will allow even more people to benefit from our distinctive and first class health care services.
“It will also give us the opportunity to expand on our community-based Social Outreach services in the area, which reach out to people experiencing disadvantage to improve health and wellbeing.”
